Which network does Salt use?
Salt inherited the mobile network developed by Orange Mobile following its acquisition in 2012. At the beginning of the last decade, Salt decided to focus on developing the second-generation GSM network using different frequency bands compared to other network operators (1800 MHz vs 900 MHz). This choice allowed for greater cell capacity but less effective signal propagation.
Thanks to continuous investments between 2013 and 2016, in the context of expanding to the new 4G standard, many 2G antennas were also converted to 3G (HSPA+). In 2014, the Salt 4G (LTE) network was launched in metropolitan areas and later in mountainous areas, reaching a coverage of 97% of the populated area of Switzerland.
For the launch of Salt's 5G network, there were some delays due to sanctions against the equipment manufacturer Huawei. For this reason, in 2020, Salt announced a collaboration with other operators to effectively develop its fifth-generation mobile coverage. To date, this development is still ongoing and not yet completed.
