How to read this CATV coverage map?

The map above shows the percentage of buildings in a given area that are covered by a coaxial cable internet connection. The areas are divided into square parcels measuring 250 x 250 meters, with a color scale ranging from red (low coverage) to green (maximum coverage). Areas without color indicate the absence of buildings or missing data provided by internet providers.

What types of coaxial cable connections exist?

The main types of coaxial cable internet connections are:

  • DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification): Technology used for cable internet, with different versions:

    • DOCSIS 3.0: Up to 1 Gbps download speeds.

    • DOCSIS 3.1: Up to 10 Gbps download speeds.

    • DOCSIS 4.0 (future): Up to 10 Gbps symmetrical speeds.

  • HFC (Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial): A hybrid fiber-coaxial network used by providers to deliver high-speed internet.

Coaxial cable connections are widely used for home internet and cable TV subscriptions.

What are the pros and cons of a CATV connection?

The following table summarizes the main advantages and disadvantages of a CATV connection:

Pros

Cons

High speeds, especially with DOCSIS 3.1.

Shared bandwidth: speeds may drop during peak hours.

Less sensitive to distance than DSL.

Slower upload speeds compared to download.

Widely available, often bundled with TV and internet packages.

Potentially higher costs than DSL.

How fast is a cable internet connection?

The speed of a CATV connection depends on the DOCSIS standard used:

  • DOCSIS 3.0: Up to 1 Gbps download and 100 Mbps upload.

  • DOCSIS 3.1: Up to 10 Gbps download and 1-2 Gbps upload.

  • DOCSIS 4.0 (in development): Up to 10 Gbps symmetrical speeds.

Actual speeds may vary due to network congestion and infrastructure quality.

With this information in mind, you can move on to the comparison section and find the subscription that suits you best.
