Starlink, SkyDSL, or Swisscom? Satellite internet plans are multiplying, but are they really worth it? Let’s find out how it works, and what the prices and features of this type of connection are.
Satellite internet is one of the newest internet connection technologies. Thanks to the rapid technological developments in the aerospace sector, satellite systems are becoming an alternative to traditional home internet subscriptions based on cable or fiber optic connections.
Although they are not yet widespread, this type of internet subscription is the best (and sometimes the only) alternative in remote areas far from urban centers, where fiber optics have already reached almost all homes. By subscribing to satellite internet, you gain access to a broadband connection that allows you to enjoy universal services accessible via the internet.

How Satellite Internet Works
With a satellite connection, the antenna installed on your rooftop sends and receives data wirelessly without needing a cable connection to a physical network.
Thanks to a system of satellites orbiting the Earth, the signal is transmitted via radio from ground antennas to geostationary satellites. These satellites communicate with each other until they reach the antennas of the NOC ground stations (Network Operations Centers). The home antenna is connected to the provided modem router, creating a WLAN network that allows you to browse the internet or use VoIP calls.
Essentially, this type of connection is based on a satellite dish. The infrastructure can be provided by the satellite operator on loan or purchased with a one-time payment.

When Is Satellite Internet Worth It?
Typically, a satellite internet subscription is only suitable when the home is not connected to fiber optics or cable. In these cases, satellite internet is one of two alternatives, along with 5G hotspot (FWA) subscriptions. These options can be compared based on the coverage provided by the operators and the estimated maximum speed.
As a general rule, for those seeking a stable wireless connection that is unaffected by bad weather, this technology may not be the best choice.
However, if satellite internet is the only available option, this type of subscription becomes a viable possibility for accessing the internet by paying a monthly fee slightly above the market average while still having limited performance.
