New study by internet-offer.ch reveals hidden charges for out-of-bundle calls
Switzerland, April 27, 2025 – Switzerland, a top tourist destination for millions of Europeans, remains a costly exception for mobile users crossing its borders.
A new report published by internet-offer.ch, the independent platform for comparing mobile and internet subscriptions, thoroughly analyzes roaming rates for tourists from neighboring countries: Italy, Germany, France, Austria, and Liechtenstein.
The study focuses particularly on "out-of-bundle" costs — the per-minute charges applied once roaming bundles or included minutes are exhausted.
The findings highlight significant disparities:
Italian tourists pay an average of only €0.25/min, followed by Liechtensteiners at €0.35/min.
German visitors face an average cost of €0.71/min — almost three times higher than Italians.
For French tourists, the average rises to €1.07/min, while Austrians face the highest cost at €1.69/min.
Since Switzerland does not participate in the EU/EEA "Roam Like at Home" regulation, considerable price variations persist, even between operators within the same corporate groups.
Statement from Lapo Zarina, Head of internet-offer.ch: "Our mission is to provide consumers with clear information and practical tools to avoid unpleasant surprises when traveling. This study once again shows how important it is for visitors to Switzerland to plan ahead — whether by choosing special roaming packages, using local SIM cards, or opting for international eSIMs. Thanks to platforms like internet-offer.ch, travelers can save substantial amounts."
